A bit of straight talk
Our practice is our client's interests.
Our clients expect us to solve their problem, even when typical solutions don't fit. We use practical solutions, but we don't force your problem into a box.
Instead we focus on the effective application of legal knowledge to surmount problems or avoid pitfalls. We love solutions that work and our clients can afford.
We focus on employment and business law, they are lenses we use to utilize our skill. However they aren't the only tool we use, or the only solutions we provide.
Ask us if we can help you with the same discretion and care we give our business and employment clients, and you may be surprised what we can do.
Our Practice Areas ... In Detail
Practice Area Focus
Employment, Workplace, and Labor Law
The realities of economics and power, not just laws, drive both businesses and employees in their decisions.
We focus on maximizing the position of our clients in negotiation, contracts, and litigation. We fight the "good" fight. We identify and address our client's needs. We know that it takes understanding to make an agreement, or to win in the face of a disagreement.
Employees benefit from our ability to see both sides of a labor dispute. We negotiate to create working relationships and settlements. We litigate by knowing the other side's position. We protect our clients by realizing that it takes understanding to create progress.
Practice Area Focus
Physician's Employment Agreements
A senior resident or a weary veteran physician both sign an employment agreement, but neither of them may realize that it is a test both their character, and their future relationship with their employer.
How professionals act in negotiations is another step in the interview process.
Our firm understands that physicians enjoy success almost as much as we enjoy winning for our clients. We have tailored our practice area in Physician's Employment Agreements to scale to your needs, provide a significant competitive edge, and help you structure negotiations with your employer in a positive light.
We create and review contracts by identifying the legal and economic systems they create, the inherent problems and opportunities in those systems, and how an issue in one system would impact the contract on the whole. We educate physicians on common outcomes, possible zebras, and hidden pitfalls stemming from ambiguous legal logic.
We counsel you so that you can act and succeed in getting what you should have, while creating a positive relationship.
Practice Area Focus
If you want to predict the future, you must create it. Our clients are practical women and men who are willing to cut a new path to success. They understand profit, risk, and the need for employees (and customers) that passionately push the business forward.
We take time to learn the needs and problems of your consumers and employees. Then we draft agreements that convince them to support the core purpose of your business - to make value and money. By generating real insight about how your business works, we create long lasting assets in your employees and positive relationships with your strategic partners, while safeguarding the golden goose that makes your company profitable.
We give sound rational opinions that lead to governing your business profitably (and ethically), balancing interests of investors, directors, and employees, and protecting the business from internal and external threats.
In short we tailor our business to our clients, so our clients may succeed in their business.
Practice Area - Jurisdiction Focus
Chicago Legal Series
The simple everyday concerns of our clients holds a special place in our law firm.
Our Chicago clients benefit from our Chicago Legal Series, a group of presentations that focuses on how the law is made and enforced within the Chicago area.
We present everyday subjects such as avoiding parking tickets, renting an apartment, bicycle safety, starting up a business, being an independent contractor, foreclosure, negotiation training, fashion law, discrimination, reading a contract, and labor law.
For free. For the benefit of the public.
And our clients benefit. We have been known to recover those security deposits and damages, talk to a neighbor about noise problems, help doctors process their licenses, mediate disputes between former friends, and help our clients prevent problems rather than creating them.
Contracts and Negotiations
We enjoy litigation. Clear concise arguments presented before a judge can win the day, and our clients can go home happy knowing they are right. Moreover, we like showing our clients where we place our loyalties (with them).
However, why do things the hard way when at times problems are more likely to work out well by negotiation. If possible, why can't everyone get what they want?
We approach contracts and negotiations as creative problem solving. We reduce risk by planning for the future and identifying what clients and opponents want so we can build future relationships and negotiate on economic and noneconomic terms that fix the problem.
After all, the best way to get rid of an opponent is to turn them into a friend and advocate.
Experienced Legal Analysis
Everyone likes an experienced attorney, it leads clients to the belief that because an attorney was successful in the past, then they know the answer to your current problem. Yet, your legal problem is not like anyone's problem. You are not like anyone else and the law changes according to the facts. To solve your problem we must be skilled researchers and analysts, not just attorneys who have had "an experience".
We intimately know how librarians, information specialists, and employees think, act, and squirrel away resources. We know the dusty shelves of libraries, the stark numbers of spreadsheets and statistics, the winding paths of electronic databases, and the cold ringing of construction yards and cubicles. We know because we used to be the researchers, the number crunchers, the technology gurus, and the workers.
We know and use this as litigators, negotiators, contract writers, and attorneys. We challenge our comfort levels by taking on cases that require novel and innovative legal solutions. We find strategies that work because we discard past successes. We flex our capabilities as attorneys by applying effort effectively and bringing greater value to our clients. In the end, we know that our clients don't want someone else's past success, but their own present workable solution.
